Mucosal Biopsy Specimens

چکیده
The effects of sodium butyrate and sodium bromo-octanoate (an inhibitor of P oxidation) on colonic mucus glycoprotein (mucin) synthesis have been assessed using tissue from colonic resection samples. Epithelial biopsy specimens were incubated for 16 hours in RPMI 1640 with glutamine, supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum and N-acetyl-[3H]glucosamine (3H]-Glc NAc), and differing concentrations of sodium butyrate. Incorporation of [3H] Glc NAc into mucin by normal epithelium at least 10 cm distant from colonic cancer was increased in the presence of sodium butyrate in a dose dependent manner, with maximum effect (476%) at a concentration of 0.1 mM (number of specimens=24 from six patients, p<0*001). The increase in response to butyrate was not seen when specimens were incubated in the presence of the P oxidation inhibitor sodium bromo-octanoate 0.05 M. The striking increase in mucin synthesis that results when butyrate is added to standard nutrient medium suggests that this may be an important mechanism affecting the rate of mucin synthesis in vivo and may also explain the therapeutic effect of butyrate in colitis. Diagnostic value of direct immunofluorescence of mucosal and skin biopsy specimens on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens compared to specimens placed in normal saline as the gold standard method in the diagnosis of a group of autoimmun
Background and Aim: Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) is represented as a gold standard method in diagnosis of autoimmune blistering dermatoses. Normal saline, liquid nitrogen and michel’ solution are a widely accepted media for preserving biopsy samples of skin or mucosa before DIF examination. Occasionally clinicians put the biopsy specimen taken for DIF in formalin 10%, occasionally clinicians...
متن کاملDetermining The Diagnostic Value Of Neuron Specific Enolase Staining Of The Mucosal-submucosal Rectal Biopsies Obtained From Patients Suspected Of Hirschsprung’s Disease
Background and Objective: Diagnosis of Hirschsprung’s disease (HD) as the most common cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction is based on the presence of aganglionosis from seromuscular or full thickness biopsy. Due to the complication of full thickness or seromuscular rectal biopsy, mucosal-sub mucosal...
متن کاملProspective audit of mucosal biopsy specimens of the gastrointestinal tract.
AIMS To determine why mucosal biopsy specimens of the gastrointestinal tract were taken and whether they were justified on clinical or pathological grounds. METHODS A prospective audit of 190 consecutive biopsy specimens received in a university hospital histology department over six weeks. RESULTS The 31 separate presenting symptoms included diarrhoea (34%), abdominal pain (16%) and rectal...
متن کاملUtility of abdominal skin plus subcutaneous fat and rectal mucosal biopsy in the diagnosis of AL amyloidosis with renal involvement
OBJECTIVES Skin fat biopsy of the abdominal wall is a simple and safe method for detecting amyloidosis, and rectal mucosal biopsy is also frequently used for screening for the disease; however, the sensitivity of these approaches has not been fully studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of skin fat biopsy combined with rectal mucosal biopsy as a screening procedure for the ...
متن کاملIn situ PCR for Mycobacterium tuberculosis in endoscopic mucosal biopsy specimens of intestinal tuberculosis and Crohn disease.
Tuberculosis and Crohn disease are granulomatous disorders affecting the intestinal tract with similar clinical manifestations and pathologic features. We evaluated the use of in situ polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex-specific primers for IS 6110 to differentiate these 2 disorders in archival mucosal biopsy specimens. In situ PCR was positive in 6 of 20 tu...
متن کاملPain experience after oral mucosal biopsy: A quasi-experimental stud y
BACKGROUND: The biopsy of an oral mucosal lesion is a minor operation. Pain might be an unpredictable consequence of the oral mucosal biopsy. The aim of this study was to examine the incidence and severity of post-operative pain following the biopsy of oral mucosal lesions in patients attending in an oral medicine department of Kerman Dental School. METHODS: Visual analogue scale (VAS) was used...
